Initially debuted in May 2016 as part of Google's messaging app Allo and its smart speaker Google Home, Google Assistant is a virtual assistant powered by artificial intelligence that is primarily available on mobile and smart home devices, as well as smartwatches running Wear OS. Unlike its predecessor Google Now, Google Assistant can engage in two-way conversations, and was designed to provide "an ambient experience that extends across devices," according to Google's CEO Sundar Pichai. It is able to search the Internet, schedule events and alarms, adjust hardware settings on the user's device, show information from the user's Google account, and more. The functionality of the Assistant can also be enhanced by third-party developers.
